August 2021 Newsletter: Changing seasons mean changing skincare

As I write this, it's still 90+ degrees outside, but it is almost Labor Day weekend and the seasons are about to change. Fall weather tends to be drier and cooler (yes, even in Colorado), which means your skin will benefit from changing up your routine a bit.

Here are my top tips for changing up your skincare routine over the next few weeks:

Proactively give your eyes and lips some love

We've all been through dry patches and flaky lips in the winter, and one way to get ahead of winter dryness is to apply eye cream and lip balm throughout the Fall. Don't forget to check expiration dates on your products and replace any that have gone bad, or haven't been used in a few months. If you are using your hands and fingers to apply these products, make sure they're clean first!

Keep exfoliating

It might seem counterintuitive, but exfoliation is important in the Fall, too. You want to keep exfoliating your skin in order to make sure your skin is able to continue to absorb beneficial products, like serums, oils and moisturizers. You may find that you need to switch to a more gentle exfoliant or exfoliate less frequently, as the weather gets colder and your skin becomes more sensitive. Personally, I decrease my clay mask usage from once a week to once every other week.

Swap out your moisturizer for something heavier

If you've been using a light lotion or gel moisturizer throughout the summer, now is the time to start switching over to a heavier moisturizer, like a cream. Heavier moisturizers will help combat dryness, especially as you spend more time indoors in heavily air conditioned or heated spaces, which tend to be drier. Protect your skin with a heavier moisturizer and look for ingredients like hyuralonic acid (to pull in moisture) and jojoba oil (to lock in moisture).
