What's the difference between cruelty-free and vegan skincare

In recent years, there’s been growing demand for cruelty-free and vegan skincare products. While these two terms are often used interchangeably, they actually have different meanings.

Here's a breakdown of the differences between cruelty-free and vegan skincare products:

Cruelty-free skincare products, and the raw materials and ingredients used to make them, are not tested on animals. Groups like PETA and Leaping Bunny certify brands and their cruelty-free practices, making it easier for consumers to understand which products are cruelty-free. It's important to note that a product can still contain animal-derived ingredients and be considered cruelty-free. For instance, a product that contains beeswax or honey will still be cruelty-free, as long as it was not tested on animals.

Vegan skincare products, on the other hand, do not contain any animal-derived ingredients. This means that no animal by-products were used in the manufacturing or production of the product. Vegan skincare products are often made with plant-based ingredients, such as candelilla wax, coconut oil, aloe vera, and jojoba oil. It's important to note that not all cruelty-free products are vegan, and not all vegan products are cruelty-free. For example, a product may not have been tested on animals but may still contain animal-derived ingredients.

Choosing cruelty-free and vegan skincare products is a personal choice that can have a positive impact on animal welfare and the environment. By choosing these products, you can support ethical and sustainable practices in the beauty industry. We care deeply about ethical and sustainable production, so we’re proud to be part of PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies Global animal test–free program and that we offer vegan options across our entire skincare line.
